You may remember the name Fafnir from the favor Fafnir’s Hoard. It turns out that Fafnir himself is still alive and roaring about. Dwarfs don’t typically roar, but they will when their greed turns them into a dragon.
Recommended Level- 4-5
Rewards for Completion- Rare Enchantment, Dragon Tear, 615 XP

This quest becomes available after the water in the Lake of Nine drops for the second time. Hop in a boat and row to the shore on the right-hand side of the two giant rowing statues.
If you use the elevator on the North end of the bridge to go down to shore, there is a treasure map near the boat titled "Island of Light." Use the boat on shore to enter the water. Just off to the right of the shore with the quest is a Yggdrasil’s Dew of Strength, which permanently increases your strength by two.
Use Atreus’ shock arrows to shatter the tree sap and create a way to climb upward. There is a large wooden door at the top. Enter to find Fafnir in his dragon form chained up. Bust open the hacksilver chest dead ahead and then drop to the center of the environemnt.
Down in the center are a bunch of Revears. Watch out for their poisonous projectiles and explosions when they die. To free Fafnir, you need to detroy three shrines holding the lock in place. This is made tough with the Revears and the fact Fafnir rains lightning from above. Apparently, dragons don’t recognize a helping hand.
One shrine is located directly to the left of Fafnir himself. Walk up the stairs on the left and destroy it with your axe, all while avoiding Fafnir’s lightning.

Walking straight back from the first shrine, you can find a small cutout to the right with the second shrine. A Reaver will be kneeling down to the shrine until you enter the area. Cut both the monster and the shrine down. Climb the wall up to find a lore marker with "Fafnir’s Tail" enscribed upon it. There is also a coffin with some steel and scales inside. Lift the gate and drop back to the center.
Make your way to the right side now to find a path up the wall that leads to the third shrine and an optional fight. There will be a Revear praying to the shrine, but there will also be a Traveler waiting at the top.
Travelers are heavily armored and armed enemies. They drop special loot to build unique Traveler armor. This particular Traveler is level 5 and totes a large sword. It is key to dodging the Traveler’s attacks. It will only take a couple to wipe you out. Deal hard attacks to the Traveler to weaken its armor. The more armor you peel off, the more damage you can do. Use runic attack or Spartan Rage to interrupt the Travelers’s attacks if you cannot dodge in time.
After all three shrines are destroyed, return to the anchor point for Fafnir’s chains. A group of level five Reavers and a level five Revanent will spawn to stop you from freeing the dragon. Focus on the Revanent first, since it can teleport all around and deal damage from afar. Use arrows to slow it down and inflict as much stun damage as you can upon it.
With the Revenant out of the picture, pick off the Reavers. Be careful not to leave a damaged Reaver alone for too long or it will regenerate its health. Fafnir’s lightning will damage them as well, if you can lure them into the damage area.
When all the enemies are dead, go to the anchor holding Fafnir down. Atreus will destroy the seal and Fafnir will fly away, grateful(?) for freeing him. You will get a rare enhancement called "Brillant Scale of the Chained," which grants a moderate perk activation chance to grant a Blessing of Runic when using Runic attacks.

Fafnir is one of three dragons in Midgard that can be freed as a part of a side quest. This favor is astutely called "Free Dragons."
