WAHOO — Bend but don’t break was the adage the Wahoo State Bank Seniors lived by in a 6-5 win against Zig Drywall at home on June 26. Despite giving up a four-run lead in the top of the seventh, the Reds held on to win in walk-off fashion.

To start the game, Fort Calhoun got two runners on with a single in the infield and then a walk. A wild pitch by Jonas Schnakenberg two batters later brought in a run for Zig Drywall and put them ahead by a score of 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, Fort Calhoun hit a batter and then walked two others to load the bases for Wahoo. A single to the shortstop in the next at-bat by Cody Hesser drove in both Sam Marxsen and Eli Johnston and put the Reds up by one.

Wahoo increased their lead to 3-1 in the fifth when an error by Zig Drywall at third base scored a run. Next up was Alex Barry who doubled to left field driving in Kaden Christen and increasing the Reds’ edge out to 4-1.

Out of the leadoff spot in the bottom of the sixth, Bo Osmera worked a walk for Wahoo. He would get to third on a groundout by Carson Sabatka and then crossed home on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 in favor of the Reds.

Eli Johnston struggled with his control in the top of the seventh and hit the first two batters of the inning. This gave Fort Calhoun the spark they needed as they ripped off two straight singles to pull within two at 5-3.

A pair of groundouts to second base and the shortstop allowed two more runs to score for Zig Drywall and tied the game up at five apiece.

Fort Calhoun did not have an ideal start to the bottom of the seventh. What should have been a routine groundout to second turned into a single for Isaiah Nagel.

Courtesy runner Conor Booth used his speed to get all the way to third base with just one out. He would end up scoring the winning run when Christen grounded out to first base during the next at-bat.

All driving in one run for Wahoo in the victory were Hesser, Christen, Barry, and Nagle.

Schnakenberg started the game on the mound for the Reds and pitched four innings, gave up one earned run, and recorded seven strikeouts. In relief, Johnston pitched three innings, surrendered three earned runs, and set down three batters on strikes.

Later in the week on June 30, Wahoo was back in action at home against Omaha Bryan. Behind 10 hits, the Reds pulled out a 10-7 victory over the Bears.

Out of the gate, Omaha Bryan was able to race out to a 4-0 lead on Wahoo. The Reds brought their big sticks in the bottom of the second and struck for eight unanswered runs.

With one out, Wahoo got two runners on when Alex Borchers worked a walk and then Osmera singled to right field. Back-to-back singles from Brody Milliken and Marxsen plated three runs and cut the Red’s deficit down to one.

An error by the catcher allowed Marxsen and Johnston to score from third and gave Wahoo their first lead at 5-4.

A bases-clearing triple by Nagel to center drove in two more runs. He scored during the next at-bat when Christen grounded out to second base.

Trailing by four, the Bears clawed their way back into the contest with two runs in the fifth inning and then another run in the sixth.

Wahoo put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth with their final two runs of the contest. They were driven on a single by Johnston and a hit by Nagle.

Finishing with one hit and three RBIs in the victory was Nagle while Milliken had one hit and two runs batted in. Both driving in one run apiece were Marxsen and Christen.

Getting the win on the mound was Marxsen who pitched four innings, gave up four earned runs, and retired six batters on strikes. Johnston came on for three innings in relief, gave up one earned run and struck out four batters.

This week the Reds had just one game. They played Shelby-Osceola-Stromsburg at Sam Crawford Field on July 2.
